Loon Mountain Offers Something for Every Snow Sport Enthusiast

I know a lot ofpeople may have forgotten about it, but along with winter generally comes snow.This season Mother Nature has been holding out on us, but we have managed tomake do with what we’ve got. This happens to be a whole lot of snowmachines. Being a student from PlymouthState University, there are a variety of mountains that are close by, includingone of my favorites, Loon Mountain. I have the privilege to ride two or threedays a week at Loon, and over the past four years, I have learned a lot aboutthe mountain and the area surrounding it.

Between the Kancamagus Highway and exit 32 on Route 95 liesLincoln and Woodstock NH. This area is aclassic ski town. As you drive in from 93 you are bombarded with ski shops andlocal restaurants. All of which I drive by without a glance in anticipation ofgoing snowboarding. However, if you’relooking for a new board, skis, or you’re new to the sport and are looking forrentals, make a quick stop at Lahout’s. Their customer service is great, andthey have an amazing selection of gear, and knowledgable people who love thesport. Don’t let their multiple locations fool you, look for the one with theold gondola outside, that’s where their skis and snowboards are located.

Moving on down the road and keeping your speed under thelimit (strictly in forced), Loon’s entrance comes into view. Once across theriver, make sure to check the main lot for spots. Although on a busy day theymay have a sign saying the lot is closed, take a spin through anyways, you maybe surprised of how close a parking spot you can find.

Once situated, it’s time to hit the slopes. I usually startwith a quick Gondola ride to the summit. Iif you don’t mind meeting new people,hop in the singles line with your friends and you can skip the whole wait.Loon’s peak provides the most trail options with all difficulties. If you’relike me and want to head to the terrain park, trails like Flying Fox and BearClaw provide a fun easy ride down to the main park. If you are more of an all mountain rider andall you want to do is find some soft open trails, South Peak is a great escapefrom both lines and tracked out trails. South Peak, a new addition to Loon, hasintermediate and advanced trails. Forthose up to the task, you can take Rip Saw, a double black diamond, which willkeep you coming back for more. I reallyenjoy a few runs on South Peak but when it really snows, and it’s time for someglade and tree skiing, I bear right at the top and head over to North Peak.

NorthPeak, in my opinion contains some of the most exciting and fun trails atLoon. Can’t Dog and Bucksaw, both woodstrails, contain some great lines. Staying to the center of Bucksaw has never leadme wrong - you can usually always find some deep snow in there. On a busy day,the solitude of the woods, along with the wind protection, can turn a cold busyday around. Hopefully with a little luck, we will have enough snow to enjoythis trail this season.

After a long day of fun in the snow, I like to relax on theporch of the Bunyan Room, grab the special of the day, and watch people comedown the mountain. If you’re looking to take advantage of some après specials,head to Gordi’s. Here you can helpyourself to some complimentary popcorn, crackers and cheese. Gordi’s offers specialsfrom 4-5:30 every day. I stopped in theother day, and they had 25¢ Buffalo wings! Ofcourse if you’re looking for a refreshing beverage, there is an accompanyingbeer special as well.

I have been going to Loon now for 4 years, and each year Iseem to find something else interesting and fun. The Mountain is a great placeto ski and ride, and the town of Lincoln is a friendly environment whereeveryone is welcome. Next time you’re looking for a place to ski or ride, headto Loon, you won’t be disappointed.

Lake Sunapee Perfect Like a Movie Set or a Hometown

Living in the Lake Sunapee region is plain and simple - a treat. Some of the joys of living in the Sunapee region include coming home at night under the night sky to watch a flock of gaggling geese silhouetted against a full moon as they migrate or waking up to the call of a loon. The Sunapee area is a region filled with people who care about people - from those who know you and those you do not. If you have a car emergency, do not be surprised if the owner of the garage offers a ride home. Neighbors always help neighbors.

A great area to enjoy the outdoors where a traffic jam means you have to wait to make a left hand turn. Easy to get to.

Indian Head Resort Offers Many Perks

Finally I got to break away and use my Indian Head Resort perk from 2010. They were great when I called to make a reservation for nights of November 17 and 18. Rose S (another GSA) joined me for the excursion.

We left Concord in the morning on Thursday with a stop at the Tanger Outlets in Tilton. Since I like to give back to those who give to us we lunched at 104 Diner (Common Man property). During a stop at the White Mt Visit Center we realized White Mt Mikey was among the missing.

Cruised Main Street for a bit and checked in at the Resort. We wanted to try the outdoor pool and jacuzzi, yet, did not want them to open for just us, so we opted for the indoor pool and hot tub. Cleaned up for dinner, I had the prime rib and we took desserts of cheesecake with strawberries back to our room for later. After that big dinner we walked around the property.

Friday morning we had a great breakfast and headed out to the Lincoln Woods Franconia Falls Trail. There had been a dusting of snow during the night and it was crisp and breezy. We were the only car in the parking lot. As we walked the trail the damage from Irene was still obvious, although many trail repairs were already done. The plan was out to the falls and back an approximate 6 mile round trip. When we approached the intersection of the Black Pond Trail Rose said that her husband had seen many moose out by Black Pond. We opted for Black Pond – the trail was good at first and then narrowed out with a steep drop on one side. That was “ok” until we got to a very steep drop off with a brook crossing and no obviously great way to cross. Remember we were heading to the falls and back (easy hike) so we did not bring our hiking poles. We decided not to risk possible injury and falling in the water – so we turned back to the falls trail. We hiked for about 3 hours and encountered two couples on the return trip.

Since the day was far from over we lunched at a sports bar in downtown Franconia, visited Garnet Hill Outlet, went to the Old Man Memorial, Harman’s Cheese, tried some letterboxing near Polly’s Pancake House and checked out the Sugar Hill Sampler (great views from there). After all that we got back to the Resort and to our delight found the outdoor pool and hot tub opened for some other guests. It was great until you got out. Dinner was great – I had baked stuffed shrimp. During dinner I looked around the dining room and spotted NHGSA Paul and a friend who had arrived on Friday for his two day stay.

NHGSA Rose on Roaring River Trail

Saturday morning we had breakfast, a stroll around the resort’s pond, a short letterboxing hike on the Roaring River Trail near the Flume and headed home. We stopped some more at a shop in Tilton owned by my neighbor’s daughter and a stop at Rose’s father’s grave site in the NH Veterans Cemetery. We also walked the area that has memorials for each branch of the service. I was quite impressed- it is a great place to visit.

What a great early weekend packed with lots of activities.

All Aboard for the Polar Express!

The holidays are a magical time of year and what better way to kick off the season but to take the beloved ride to the North Pole on the Polar Express! This year, my sister-in-law Bridget and I hatched a plan to score some tickets for our families on the Polar Express Event of New England, and it all started in September .... which made for a very early start to the holiday season...

For the Polar Express Event of New England, which leaves from either North Conway or Lincoln, your entry and donation must be postmarked by October 1st. (For those of you that are just thinking of the Polar Express now, there are a few tickets which recently became available from the Lincoln location you can click here to see the available dates and purchase online) So we both sent in our entries with donations - hers to Lincoln, mine to North Conway - hoping we could hedge our bets. On the scheduled call days, volunteers for the Polar Express Event work their way through all the entries, calling each person and offering whatever seats are still available. When you receive the call, you have to make your decision on the spot and provide payment. If you don't answer, you lose your tickets. We were lucky enough that Bridget's call day was first and she was able to get tickets for all of us on the same Saturday night. (Consequently, I did get a call the next day but it was quite late in the afternoon and no Friday or Saturday tickets were available) Thank goodness we divided and conquered!

Now, the D'Amelios are a rowdy bunch so we took the feedback from other families who had attended in the pajamas and decided to all dress in matching PJs - I am sure we were quite the sight! But the kids were excited (the adults, too!) so we headed off in our matching outfits for the 7pm departure from the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH on December 3rd. We arrived early to get to the head of the boarding line, the two little boys were in heaven playing with trains in the gift shop!

Promptly at 6:30, the doors opened and we rushed to board the actual train. True to the book, the train staff came by with hot chocolate for everyone and we enjoyed the yummy treat all the way to the North Pole.

Upon arrival at the North Pole, Santa's elves were standing along the path to help guide us to the theater and played along well with the kids. Our elf "Icecube" was very playful and asked the kids about their Santa lists - delighting each and every one with his attention.

We settled into the theater and enjoyed a reading from The Polar Express. Then the Big Man came out to greet the sea of excited kids and took the time to walk around and greet each one. This was definitely the highlight for our crew! (We had no idea Santa had this kind of time on his hands during this time of year!) After selecting a child to receive the first gift of Christmas, we all made our way back to the train and started the long trek back to NH from the North Pole. During our ride, the train staff came around again, this time to give each child a sleigh bell to take home. My girls were so excited to exclaim that they could still hear it ring!

It was a very delightful evening, and fun to see so much of the book come to life before our very eyes. It was definitely a memory that will stay with us for a long time - hopefully our matching PJs will last as long! :-)

Bretton Woods Canopy Tour Great Way to Tour Mount Washington

A very nice Sunday November 13, 2011 found Mariette and I traveling to Bretton Woods. We had reservations at noontime to take-in the Bretton Woods Canopy Tour of tree-top zip lines. Now the decision to do the Tour did not come easy. Both Mari and I have our issues with heights and motion sickness. But this Tour was to celebrate my 65th. So “issues” went out the window.

Our tour included five “young” riders all from Portland, Me. In total our group numbered seven. After signing the requisite paperwork, our guides Carl and Zake set us into harnesses, moved us to a van, and we arrived near the mountaintop for a few minutes of instruction and a practice zip.The keys to Zip Lining are the body curling and the hand braking. If you are bad at either or both your run may come up short or long, A slow run may cause you not to reach the arriving platform. If you fail to brake you may come up too long (read over shooting the arriving platform). Not good!

I came up short of the approaching platform on 6 of 9 zips. However, I mastered the last 3 zips. A short zip means you have to manually pull yourself along the cable up to the arriving platform, or the guide has to extend himself out from the platform to pull you in. An overshoot of the platform means the guide has the challenge of catching and stopping you from hitting the tree that is holding up the arriving platform. It is somewhat embarrassing when you don’t meet the “platform” goal.

This is a wonderful way to spend 3-4 hours. The crew is experienced and safety is the name of the game. Being outdoors with the Presidential Range as your neighbor is just the best. Bretton Woods Canopy Tour consists of 9-10 Zip Lines (depending on the season), 2 Sky Bridges, and 3 Rappels down trees. Zip lines range from 120 to 830 feet with the maximum height from the ground of 150 feet. The views were wonderful and much appreciated especially since as “youngsters” we have hiked much of the Presidential Range. Mt Washington was crusted in snow. The Mount Washington Cog Railway stands out and on our day at Bretton Woods there were two train runs to the top of the Mount. A glass of wine at the Mt. Washington Hotel followed by dinner at the Common Man Italian Farmhouse in Plymouth finished a wonderful day.

While working MHT I have only had a couple of inquiries about Zipping in NH. A Zip Line Tour is a great recommendation to our guests. My understanding is that there are 3 Zip Line Tours in N.H. Mari and I will be buying tour gift certificates for our adult kids for Christmas. And certainly Zip time at Bretton/Mt Washington is on my GSA recommendation list.

A Visit to Swan Chocolates in Merrimack NH

Swan Chocolates, a family name (Swan, not chocolates), is a wonderful stop if you are looking for a special New Hampshire made gift before heading home via the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. It is conveniently located on Route 3 in Merrimack near the new, soon-to-be opened, airport access road. The retail shop is a cozy building with beautiful lighting and comfy seating for coffee and chocolate tasting.

Abbotts Market was located on this spot for many, many years. As Granite State Ambassadors we are used to getting the history and details about buildings and business locations, this tour did not disappoint! I am sure if you asked (especially if you called ahead) they would be glad to tell you about the rich history of the building, the Abbotts and even the ghost sightings (and phone calls) in the building.

Now, down to the real reason we are all interested.... the CHOCOLATE! As someone with a restricted diet I was pleased to see many gluten-free items and the staff was quick to point out the dairy free options as well! All great news... BUT did you know that chocolate is actually a fruit!?! So 5 serving a day will keep the doctor away? Yummy!

Inn at Pleasant Lake Treats You Like Royalty

We arrived at the Inn at Pleasant Lake on a perfectly early summer day. It was only a short distance out of New London, NH, 1.5 miles down a quite paved road. As we arrived the owner and his crew were just finishing the final touches to a beautiful rock wall with a patio and sidewalk to the entry. I couldn't stop myself from walking over and complementing them on their artistic work.

Then into the lobby. We were shown the downstairs where there was a living room, another room with computer with Internet access and TV, the dining room, and indoor patio. We were told dinner would be served at 6:30, but tea was going on now. We then went upstairs to our rooms. I felt like I was queen for a day, the room was picture perfect! As I entered the suite with a couch and chair in the living area, then onto the bedroom. The bed was beautifully made with white linens, so puffy and just waiting for me later that evening. The bathroom was sparkling and roomy with all the goodies to make you feel special.

I next met with my group at the indoor patio for tea. The table was set with a gorgeous big bouquet and linens, special tea, nuts, cheese, crackers and homemade cookies. All delicious! As we had our tea we overlooked Pleasant Lake with Mt. Kearsage in the backround. The sandy beach was private, with chairs, and kayaks and canoes on the side just waiting to be used.

The Inn is a perfect place to relax and unwind, forget the hustle and bussle of our busy lives. Later when dinner was about to be served we were greeted by Brian and Linda the owners, who told us about the area, the history of the Inn, and then Brian, the chef, explained our full five course dinner. The dinner was delicoius with flavors that melted in your mouth, and presented beautifully. Service was excellent and the best treat of all was Brian coming out later and talking to all diners.

After watching the Bruins win the Stanley Cup I went to bed. I got up early the next morning to explore the trails around the area. I was given a trail map and followed the easily marked trails for my early morning hike. When I got back a continental breakfast awaited me with a wonderful selection of fresh fruit, cereal, yogurt, great coffee and I'm sure I'm forgetting what else. Then the waitress came and explained the full breakfast. Yummy! Like I said, if you want to be queen for a day just go to the Inn on Pleasant Lake, a great place!!!!!

Manning House Example of NH Philanthropy

The Manning House once was a private residence, but upon Mrs. Manning's death, the home was donated to the church. The chapel and church were added later. The property is on ten acres of land currently owned by the Brookside Congregational Church, which is located at 2013 Elm Street in Manchester, NH. The second floor of the Manning House is office space for the church, and the downstairs area is used for gatherings for many functions.

But I find the history so compelling. The Manning House and Carriage Barn was built as a wedding gift for Mary (Carpenter) Manning from her father, Mr. Frank Carpenter. Frank Carpenter was a philanthropist and owner of the mills. Both Mary and her father were longtime active members of the Franklin Street Church. By the mid-1950's, the Franklin Street was weakening structurally and major renovations were needed to make it safe. A decision had to be made either to fund expensive and extensive alterations or build a new church on another site. Mrs. Mary Manning offered her 10-acre estate on North Elm St. known as "The Brook" to the church if the congregation wanted to relocate and build new. The congregation voted to accept Mrs. Manning's offer. The Manning House and carriage barn were adapted for congregational use and connected to the sanctuary. The original chapel from Franklin Street was then incorporated into the Manning residence.

I find this to be an interesting anecdote. A friend's uncle was married in the Franklin Street Chapel... many years later his wife passed away. He re-married in the same chapel, but it was moved to it's new location in the Manning House about a mile away.

There is a Children's Memorial Garden on the property, a place of peace and serenity located at the South lawn of the Manning House. It is a place in honor and memory of all our children, grandchildren, and siblings. It is open to the public to visit anytime. In the fall, an annual butterfly release is held in the Memorial Garden. Mrs. Manning was also a bereaved parent, having lost her son at the age of 14.

The overall architecture is beautiful, and the interior carved wordwork is beautiful. There is so much to see in this lovely home. One interesting feature of the house is a classical temple like porch entryway. Somewhat out of character with the rest of the house and reflects an interest in Colonial Revival architectural style that existed side-by-side with the Queen Ann Revival during this period. The dining room even has leather wallpaper.

Can't Go Wrong with the Kanc!

One day at the Big E two women came up to me and started thanking me profusely. While I was trying to figure out what magnificent act I had performed, one of them got a little more specific and said they were so happy that they had spoken to me at last year's Big E and when they asked what they should do on an upcoming visit to NH I recommended a drive across the Kanc. (I always recommend a drive across the Kanc. How can I go wrong?) Well, following my advice, they did drive across the Kanc and the Bear Notch Rd, as well. They were still aglow with the experience! The thing that really caught their attention was an inquisitive red fox who approached them at one of the lookouts along the Kanc. They were drinking water and munching on rice cakes. They offered some to the fox and he (she?) was only too happy to share lunch with them.

So, remember ~~~ always recommend the Kanc and notify the wildlife that you're shipping in some tourists.

Dexter's Inn Offers Plenty of Indoor and Outdoor Activities

The Sunapee area revels in their quiet, unhurried, hassle free environment and rightly so. A consummate example is Dexter's Inn, a special country resort-inn blessed with an idyllic setting on a 20 acre estate. With three tennis courts, an outdoor pool and many other sporting activities, relaxation isn't all that the Inn is about. Other, more involved sports, are just minutes away.

What immediately strikes you is the tree lined approach and the magnificent, manicured lawns, which are all maintained by a minimal number (but very talented) of staff. The view from the parking lot is amazing...panoramic views of Mount Kearsarge, Mount Sunapee and the surrounding countryside....and yes, even some very comfortable chairs await you to relax and take in the view even before you unpack.

My favorite indoor sport, reading, is well handled by a living room featuring a fireplace and an entire library of books...and you can even enjoy your favorite (well mannered, of course) pet by your side while you read. Probably unheard of in inn keeping is a "BYOB" policy and they will provide the glasses, ice and openers. A book, a purring cat and a glass of wine....what a life!!

Probably the nicest part is the Innkeeper, John Augustine. He is what the quintessential NE Innkeeper should be....warm, welcoming and accommodating and he even wears a green (GSA colored) shirt!! We all agreed that this would be a wonderful experience for our NH visitors!!

Rosewood Inn Celebrates Unique NH In Unexpected Ways

During our Granite State Ambassador Educational Tour of the Sunapee Region, I was fortunate to have my name chosen in the lottery for The Rosewood Country Inn in Bradford, NH.

Although the Inn is 8 minutes off the main track in Bradford, and was a half hour drive from our meeting place in New London, we found ourselves to have been blessed with a wonderful overnight diamond. As we approached along the quaint and scenic Pleasant View Road we couldn't help but wonder what kind of place we must be headed for, but soon we found this was definitely a delightful place where one would definitely go for a relaxing time away from the world. The acres of manicured, sculpted, picturesque land dressed in flowers was breathtaking. And sitting in it's midst, lying so quiet and lovely was a gorgeous three storied Victorian home with several gables and surrounding Farmers porch with wicker furniture, an artist's painting to behold with a subtle green wooden siding and rose-colored shutters beside all it's many windows.

We immediately felt welcomed as "Dick" met us at the paved drive with his feline friend (who was NOT allowed into the guest area doors) and helped us with our luggage. Inside, we saw the charming guest Living Room and Game/reading room so tasteful and immaculate in Victorian charm with a wide staircase going to the second floor of beauty. There we met "Leslie" and our host owners explained how they had moved from the big city and purchased this "run-down farmhouse and land" about 20 years ago and had done all the renovations and additions slowly over the years, Dick doing the landscaping and helping with the guests, and Leslie doing the Interior Decorating, cooking and collaborating with the architectural designing. She related that she had purchased all hand-made laces and other linens.

And what a fine job they did! Each of the twelve guest rooms are luxuriously decorated and uniquely and aptly named for an American Statesman, an honored woman, or a historical theme. (Abigail Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Whispering Pines, Nathanial Hawthorne, Williamsburg, Sturbridge, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Moondance, Dreamcatcher)

We were speechless as we viewed our guest rooms. Mine was romantically adorned with Rose covered vintage style wallpaper and matching quilted chintz window coverings and contrasting pillows on a high posted, queen-sized, hand laced canopied bed with special touches that would have suited Nathanial Hawthorne himself. And the large, full bath facility with all of one's needs was entered via a smaller room containing a corner Jacuzzi decorated with rubber duckies. One could not want for anything, and could feel welcomed and comfortable with a room like this - TV, gas fireplace, electric clock radio, extra bed pillows in a separate closet, (no wi-fi!), windows that opened to the fresh air, a perfectly wonderful mattress, and all the little touches like an ongoing journal for the guests found on the side table and a copy of a self-made book called "Return to Rosewood" by a local NH author.

I slept beautifully and awoke to the sound of the birds through my window ajar as they sang from the surrounding greenery, so beautiful with the upcoming sun.

Our morning breakfast was called and we entered a beautiful large dining room clothed for a gourmet banquet in white clothes and rose-colors napkins, candlelight and crystal, silver settings in front of a fully glassed window overlooking a small pond. We certainly were made to feel extra special as Dick served us graciously with a delightful menu of fruit, muffins, juice, coffee and quiche. Breakfast will never be the same again!

This was a perfect spot for a getaway, and we sincerely thanked our owner hosts for their generous hospitality and offering. I wished we could have stayed longer but our Ambassadors were awaiting us for another day's adventure.

Dick and Leslie can rest assured that I will definitely recommend their lovely Inn and hospitality to our NH visitors that wish to visit their area or even a NH resident that wishes to get away from it all for awhile.

I have no doubt that they will once again "Return to Rosewood".

Franklin Pierce was the only United States President who hailed from New Hampshire and served as the country’s 14th president. There are several points of interest in NH that relate to Franklin Pierce, including his childhood homestead in Hillsborough, the Pierce Manse in Concord, and his burial site in the Old North Cemetery, also in Concord.

The Franklin Pierce Homestead in Hillsborough is where Pierce spent most of his childhood; it was constructed by his father the year Franklin was born. Here Daniel Webster was entertained in the ballroom on the second floor, and Franklin Pierce drilled local militia groups. The mansion is maintained and operated by the Hillsborough Historical Society. It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The home is located off Route 31; New Hampshire residents are admitted free of charge, while others pay a small admission fee. Guided tours are offered. The Pierce Manse is located at 14 Horseshoe Pond Lane in Concord, and is the only house ever owned and occupied by Franklin Pierce, his wife Jane, and their two children. Constructed in Greek Revival style, the home is open for tours from June through October. Threatened with demolition in 1966, it was saved and moved to a site in Concord's Historic District. The house has been restored and many of the furnishings either belonged to Pierce or other members of his family. Group tours may be scheduled by appointment.

The Franklin Pierce Burial Site is in the Old North Cemetery in Concord. Pierce is buried there with his wife Jane and two of their sons. The gravesite was refurbished and the deteriorating markers were replaced by a single granite spire with all the names inscribed. The first child was buried elsewhere at the time of death. The burial site sits toward the rear of the graveyard and is marked by a tall marker. There is also an historical marker in the cemetery with more information about Pierce’s life.

A distinguished statue of Franklin Pierce sits proudly on the lawn of the NH State House on Main Street in Concord. The dedication took place on November 25th, 1914. Polly's Pancake Parlor is Delicious Any Time of Day

Last fall when my folks were visiting, we took a drive upnorth. Since two of my Father’s favorite foods are maple sugar/syrup and pancakes, I decided to take them to Polly’s Pancake Parlor. I hadn’t been there in a long time and was delighted that it had the same warm rustic feel I remembered.

Although they have a lot of other things on the menu, we were set for breakfast and that is one of their strengths. The fact that they have a tray on the table with maple syrup, maple cream and granulated maple sugar was a big hit. My Dad ordered a full stack of pancakes while my Mom and I did the half stack along with some meat. They have a variety of batters along with different add-ins. And you can opt for up to three different combinations. So I think I had blueberry buckwheat, walnut buttermilk and coconut cornmeal. They are 3-inch pancakes and you get either 3 or 6. What’s really nice if you order the full stack is they bring you three to begin with and then after a little while bring you three more hot from the griddle. And everything was delicious!

The dining room overlooked the mountains and is beautiful. Someone happened to spot some bears playing and clued in the rest of the dining room.

They also have a wonderful little gift shop, which includes Polly’s pancake mix and lots of maple products. You can also order off their website year round.

However, they are closed in the winter, so don't hold off a visit of your own! Once they close for the season, they won't open again until the beginning of May 2012 (check their website for seasonal details). Whenever you do visit, it’s a great destination any time of the day.

Candlelite Inn is All About the Personal Touches

The distance from the Lake Sunapee Region Chamberof Commerce seemed long in that we went down the interstate that took us eastsouth east and then we cut to the west to get to the Candlelite Inn. When we reached Bradfordand made the last turn, there it was. Ourfirst impression of the late 1800s building was that it looked like a convertedfarm house. Instead, the Candlelite Inn wasbuilt as a guest house (inn) with what we thought to be a barn but was a stableand carriage house. Marilyn and Les Gordon,who visited NH over the years from southern New Jersey (NJ Turnpike Exit 3), bought theinn in 1997 and have done extensive work to bring it to its pleasant andpresent state.

The Candlelite Inn, Bradford, NH

Having never stayed at a B&Bbefore, we did not know what to expect. Whenwe arrived, we were delighted that Marilyn was outside greeting and welcomingus with her warm smile! She made us feel like we were returning guests.

Marilyn gave us a tour of the Inn. Rita and Leo were in The Mini Suite on thefirst floor with access to a gazebo porch, cute front glass stove in thesitting area and a beautiful queen sized bed and large bath. Also, there was a decanter of sherry with twoglasses for them to enjoy a pre-meal drink (aperitif). The finishing touches were outstanding, evendown to a rubber ducky to float in the bathtub while bathing.

Ron and Judy were in the Peach Room onthe second floor with four posted bed, a sofa, decorative trunk and a mirroredarmoire. Again, there was a decanter ofsherry there for their enjoyment. The bathroomwas large and spacious. A variety ofamenities (including a rubber ducky) were provided.

The rooms were warm and cozy, Rita,Leo, Ron and Judy were all very happy to be there.

Marilyn was so accommodating withour special request as Leo wanted to see the Bruins in the final game forthe Stanley Cup on Wednesday evening. She set up the TV in thebreakfast room tuned to the correct station and all we had to do was hit the"on" button. Our leisurely dining experience in New London thatevening took much longer than anticipated. We felt badly because we weregreatly delayed in returning to the Inn. Because of Marilyn's kindness, we were able to see the most important part ofthe game....the last 5 minutes... and all the celebratory happenings andpresentation of the trophies. As an Inn Keeper, Marilyn is thetops!!

Our Breakfast Main Course

Nextmorning, the gourmet breakfast that Marilyn Gordon served was extraordinarilyDELICIOUS and NOT the usual bacon, eggs, toast and cereal. Instead, we enjoyed the starter of biscuitswith butter; main course of mascarpone stuffedFrench toast and dessert of home made pound cake with crème fraiche and berries.

This stay was our first Bed andBreakfast experience! It was pleasurableto have the personal touch, to actually talk to the people who run and are theoperation. To learn about the work thatwent into restoring the building, the recipe and the effort that went intopreparing the breakfast that we had. Itwas an experience that only offered by a Bed and Breakfast not the chains.

The Candlelite Inn will be adestination for us some time in the future. We surely will recommend itto our friends and visitors to New Hampshire we encounter as Granite State Ambassadors.

If your idea of traveling through Concord, New Hampshire is flying by the exits on Interstate 93, then you’ve never really been to Concord. Probably best known throughout the world as the birthplace of the Concord Coach, Concord became the state capitol in 1808, and is an exciting city that’s rich in history, culture, education, and heritage. Downtown Concord is a hub of unique shops, restaurants, and historic sites. When you do visit Concord, plan to spend a day or two and don’t miss these interesting stops:

The State House: Located in the center of town on North Main Street, the capitol building is the oldest one in the country where the legislature still meets in its original chambers. Take a tour and see the legislative body in session. As you walk the hallways, note the portraits of past Governors on the walls.

The Museum of NH History: Contained within Eagle Square, the museum is a must-see for anyone interested in exploring how the state was born. Exhibitions include a birch bark canoe, a simulated fire tower, and of course an authentic Concord Coach. Take time to browse through the extensive gift shop; you’ll find plenty of books, maps, and historically significant items.

McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center: Named for Alan Shepard, who was the first man in space, and Christa McAuliffe, the first private citizen in space, the center is New England’s largest air

and space museum. Families love the planetarium shows and other events. The center is located at 2 Institute Drive.

The State Library: Situated at 20 Park Street, the library is an attraction in itself. Resources and services include catalogs, online databases, a Family Resource Connection, and even an ‘Ask a Librarian’ service for research questions.

Get Outside and Explore New Hampshire with Letterboxing!

This is one of my favorite hobbies, inexpensive and I have been to the most interesting places, its gets everyone outside. Websites like www.letterboxing.org and www.atlasquest.com can explain it better then I can. You don’t need any expensive equipment to do it.

First, you figure out a trail name. Mine is skier4444 (when you go to those sites you will see letterboxes that I have put out). Then, you either buy or make a stamp that goes along with trail name (yes, mine is a skier) and buy a blank book to put other stamps in (to start with can use back of index cards that come in a book). In your backpack, you also will put in a pen to write comments, either ink pens or ink pad to stamp the stamps. Then you’re ready to start your adventure...

Go to one of the listed websites above, type in a location and out comes with a list of letterboxes for that area. You will be very surprised how many you see listed in your search. Clues will say if they are close to the road or how many miles, and if located inside or outside. Print out the clue (if have an iPod, iPhone, iPad there is an application for this, so you will always have them) and off you go on an adventure.

When you find the box, it can be anything from a film canister to a Tupperware box. You open the box, and in it, will be a log book and a stamp - the stamp usually represents location of where you are. Use their stamp to stamp your book, and then take your stamp and stamp their book and write a little note, like what the date was and your trail name. Be very sure to put the box where it was found, so you won’t ruin the next person's adventure. Rather than carrying a book, some people keep their stamps on index cards and make a scrapbook when they get home and take photos of their adventure. What a fun way to document your search!

50th Anniversary Preserve Letterboxing Challenge. This year the nature.org is having a 50 year anniversary of letterboxing in NH. A series of letterboxes will be “planted” at 12 preserves across the state and one on the grounds of the Balsams Grand Resort Hotel. A “series” includes 3-5 letterboxes on one preserve linked by a common theme. Your challenge is to collect as many series as possible during the year 2011. Kaleidoscope Museum: Charming Place for Creative Play

One of the stops on our recent Manchester tour was the Kaleidoscope Museum, housed in the Millyard Buildings at 250 Commercial Street, Suite 1004.

What an absolute delight! I find myself thinking of everyone who has kids between the ages of 9 months and 6 to 7 years that I could kidnap for a day to take there.
We walked in to this huge bright space with all these wonderful areas to play, including a pirate ship, a climbing wall, a pizza kitchen, a puppet theatre and many more.

Here the children can play and be as creative as they wish, with no TV or video games. Mothers can bring their own food to this facility and stay all day with their little ones if they wish. The best part is that Mom’s are free.

The owner, Michelle Carignan, is a dedicated, creative person to come up with this unique idea. She will provide birthday parties if you wish along with other parties. Often there are special events going on that are just all part of the admission.

If you have little ones, you owe to them to visit this charming place.

Rumor has it that it’s mud season in New Hampshire. Well, that might be true, but along with the mud comes some incredible wildlife watching. Viewing wildlife is fun and educational – and free! It’s a family-friendly activity, you can do it just about anywhere, and the best part is you can drive aimlessly and practically be guaranteed to see something. Spring is a great time to look for wildlife because the trees are still bare and it’s easier to spot animals during this time of year. Here are a few tips that will help you get the most out of your wildlife watching expeditions:

Hawks: Hawks can be seen during all times of the day into early evening. Look for them near open fields, along interstates, and circling over head. Hawks like to perch themselves near tree tops so they can spy on their prey. The most common ones are the red-tailed hawks; they are mainly brown with a white, speckled breast and belly. Scan the tops of trees along road ways and you are virtually guaranteed to see a hawk.

Herons and other water birds: They’re back! Herons like to wade in shallow water and walk slowly along river banks. Look for them in marshy, wet areas that settle along streams and rivers. They fly slowly overhead, flapping their oversized wings with their tiny feet visible under their bellies. If you’re lucky, a heron will lead you to its nest.

Red-winged Blackbirds: Nothing says spring is here like the presence of red-winged blackbirds. They gather in cattail marshes and other wetlands, spreading their wings in order to be noticed. The females tend to keep closer to the ground while the males preen at the tops of the cattails and trees.

Moose: With over 6,500 moose in New Hampshire, you are bound to see one in your travels – if you know where to look. Expect to go north to increase your chances of seeing one. The northern sections of Routes 16 and 3 are excellent roads to take in order to see a moose. If you spot a few cars on the side of the road, or if a car coming in your direction flashes its lights at you, it’s likely there’s a moose ahead. Moose like to hang around wet roadside areas called licks. Slow down, use caution, and stay back if you decide to take pictures. Moose are especially hard to see at night.

Deer: You never know where you’ll see a deer, but they are around. The last one I saw was trotting alongside Route 93 near Campton in the middle of the day. Keep looking along the edges of open fields, especially at dawn and dusk.

Eagles: Spotting an eagle is an exciting and rare opportunity. Boating on a large body of water will increase your chances of seeing one. Look for a large bird with a white capped head and white tail feathers. The eagle has black wings and a huge yellow-orange beak. They like to soar through the air and nest along cliffs, and their wingspan can reach 6 feet!

Wildlife watching is a great way to spend your spring weekends. Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it. It’s the perfect activity when the kids complain that there’s “nothing to do.” For more information about wildlife watching in New Hampshire, please visit the NH Fish & Game website.

If you’re old enough to know what a Burma Shave sign is, then you might remember what is was like to pile into the family car and travel aimlessly on a vacation. I’m talking about going back in time, even before Interstate 93 was constructed through New Hampshire. A time when road trips were a way of life, lodging reservations were unheard of, and each corner you turned brought a different adventure. Fast forward to our Route 3 Retro Tour, one of our newest itineraries on VisitNH.gov.

The Retro Tour takes you along Route 3 beginning in Meredith and ending in Pittsburg. During the ‘50’s and ‘60’s, this was the main north-south route that vacationers and business travelers frequented. Follow this path today and you may be surprised to know that many of the attractions and motels along this route are the same ones that were there way back when. Stops along the road include diners, motels (which is a term that blended the words ‘motor’ and ‘hotel’), time-tested attractions (like Clark’s Trading Post, one of the oldest in the state), and beautiful, natural scenery. Did you know that gasoline was 15 cents a gallon in 1950? The itinerary contains an interesting timeline with many historical dates and facts like this about how life has evolved since the ‘50’s.

The Route 3 Retro Tour is a must-do for visitors, as it paints a clear picture of what it was like to travel through New Hampshire after the end of World War II. Happy Retro Touring!

Granite State Ambassadors Visited Rock Estates in April 2010

Aaaaah, spring. You know it’s here when you start seeing buckets and tubing attached to sugar maple trees in your travels – the cold nights and warm days are generating the sap flow, which will be boiled down and turned into rich and delicious maple syrup. It’s part of New Hampshire’s tradition, and this year’s Maple Weekend will be held on March 19th and 20th. This is a big deal in the Granite State, as more than 80 maple sugar houses will be open for authentic gathering of the sap, sap-boiling demonstrations, and - best of all – hot pancake breakfasts featuring warm and sweet New Hampshire maple syrup.

Family, Farm Land, Flea Market, and Free Critters

Welcome to the town where I live, Hollis, New Hampshire, population 7,500. Hollis was incorporated by Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth in 1746. The name 'Hollis' comes from a Wentworth ancestor John Holl ‘e’s Earl of Clare. We’re located 7 miles west of Nashua, and Hollis abuts the Massachusetts line.

Hollis still has mixed-use farm land, apple orchards, corn fields, vegetables. We have several farm stands for Pick Your Own apples, peaches, blueberries, raspberries in season. The largest farm stand is Brookdale Fruit Farm founded in 1847 by the Edwin Hardy and the Hardy family still runs the farm to this day. The history as to how this farm developed over the years is very interesting. These farms bring in migrant workers who return year after year, as they are treated like family. Good housing is provided for these family men who come to our town each growing and harvesting season.

Thousands come to Hollis in June and October for the Strawberry and Apple Festivals sponsored by the Hollis Women’s Club and Hollis Town Band. The band plays while everyone is enjoying the delicious Strawberry Sundaes and Apple Crisp. Old Home Days in September is a three-day event starting with a dance and ending with fireworks.

Like all small towns, the center of Hollis has Monument Square, the Historic District which is a pleasant place to walk starting with the Nevins Stone and the Church Yard Cemetery, where many Revolutionary War soldiers are buried. Many lovely homes are located both in the Square and on Main Street, such as Cummings house 1743, Fisk House 1750, Goodale House 1600’s, which was part of the Underground Rail Road, and Whiting-Poole House 1771. The 'Always Ready' Engine House 1859 is a museum and you’ll find among other items the Horse Drawn Hearse, purchased in 1858. The hearse is a handsome vehicle with etched cranberry windows and upholstered interior. It was retired in 1920. The Ruth Wheeler house is also located on Main Street. It’s the home of the Hollis Historical Society as a permanent home for their possessions. The Engine House and Wheeler House are open by appointment only and are open during the Festivals.

Down Depot Road about ¼ mile is the Historic Restored Lawrence Barn dating back to 1780. It is a double English-style timber framed, it is one of ½ dozen still remaining in New England. It was dismantled in 1999 as it was going to be destroyed by a developer, but a group stored its lumber for several years then reconstruction began and it is now a Community Hall where many activities are held.

A short drive down Rt. 122 onto Ridge Road is the Beaver Brook Association, an Educational Conservation Association. It is a non-profit organization that began in 1964 by two cousins, Hollis P. Nichols and Jeffrey P Smith. It started with 12 acres and now there are 2,000 acres located in Hollis, Brookline and Milford. Within these acres, there are 35 miles of hiking, biking, horseback riding trails, and lots of wildlife. I live near Beaver Brook and have almost too many deer in my yard, lots of wild turkeys, and one mountain lion ran thru while I was standing in my driveway several years ago. Just this summer while watering my flowers, I heard a rustle in the bushes and there was a good size black bear! This guy has been in my yard several times according to my neighbors, and he left his scat, but this time I saw him for myself.

Silver Lake State Park is also located in Hollis on Rt. 122 and is a very popular swimming beach. Further up on Rt. 122, the Hollis Flea Market is open during the good weather.

So this is where I live, and I know if you take a drive to Hollis, I know you’d want to live here.

Whining Dogs and Clean Snow

What do you do the weekend between the divisional playoffs and the Superbowl? Judy (no, not that Judi, the Judy that was the recipient of the 2010 GSA Hospitality from the Heart award) and I looked in on the Sled Dog Races on Lake Chocorua in Tamworth and the Snow Sculpting Competition held at the Black Mountain Ski Area in Jackson, NH. Both events ran both Sat and Sun. The weather was great and the crowds manageable.

The Tamworth Outing Club has hosted one of the races on the sled dog racing

circuit for many years. This race is one of the longest continuous running sled dog races in the Northeast. Many of you probably know that Admiral Bird’s sled dog teams were trained in the Wanalancet part of Tamworth, NH. I moved to Tamworth in 1964 and volunteered in '65 by packing some of the race course on snow shoes. While most of the up to 20 miles of course is packed by snow machines, some places still need the snow shoe approach. Eventually I worked up to cook hamburg's and hot dogs. I firmly believe the dogs have the most fun. They sure love to run. I counted 4 handlers plus the driver holding a 9 dog team back at the starting line until "mush" was called over the loud speaker. There were all kinds of whining and barking while waiting to go but once they heard "mush" there was instant silence. The "mushers" were holding on for dear life when they left the starting tunnel. We also had a chance to see the kids race a couple hundred yard sprint with only one dog pulling them and the sled. In a couple of cases it seemed that the kid was doing most of the work.

Going into Jackson on Sunday we went through the famous covered bridge and by my Alma Matter, Christmas Farm Inn, site of my GSA training in 2008. We climbed up 16B for a couple of miles to the Black Mountain Ski Area where an invitational Snow Sculpture competition was being held. This is the only New Hampshire State Sanctioned Snow Sculpting Competition! We got there just as the judging was about to begin so all the creations were in pristine condition. The general public had a chance to vote and Judy's choice was also the choice of the public. Exhibitors also judged. Non NH exhibitors judged the NH entries and the NH folks judged the non residents. The winner was to go on to a National competition and possibly International. It certainly is amazing what you can do with a pile of snow. I found it hard to imagine how they were able to keep the snow so clean. There were about 15 creations and one heck of a lot of talent was on display.

There is so much to see and do. Being a GSA makes me more aware of the many things that are close by and interesting.

Because so many French people immigrated here during the industrial revolution, New Hampshire had lots of cities and towns that began forming neighborhoods nicknamed “Little Canadas.” The French had a huge influence on the heritage and culture of many families, and our website is proud to feature a brand new Franco-American Itinerary that’s designed for folks who want to explore their French heritage in New Hampshire.

The tour is centered in Manchester, as the Queen City was once home to the largest mill complex in the world, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. It features dining establishments that offer classic French dishes on their menus, organizations that center on educating visitors about the Franco-American culture in New Hampshire, and other points of interest directly related to the influence that the French-Canadians had in the Granite State.

Although the itinerary centers on Manchester, there are many other communities throughout New Hampshire that still carry remnants of a strong Franco-American presence within their architecture, their restaurants, and most of all, their people.

Four Homes, One Tax Bill, and Endless History

The Woodman Institute Museum located in Dover, NH offers four buildings to explore ...Woodman Home Galleries, Hale House, Damm Garrison, and Keefe House and Carriage Barn. I found this to be a very entertaining, and educational way to spend two hours in New Hampshire. Below is a short synopsis of this very interesting tour to explore in NH.

The Damm Garrison is a well preserved 300 year old house that is now a museum with a collection of over 800 items. Period artifacts enable museum visitors to experience colonial Dover.

The Woodman Home is quite unique with an extensive collection of rocks and fossils, Indian Artifacts, Mammals and Marine Life, Birds and Butterflies, Snakes and Turtles, and a Doll lovers collection. The top floor is a Memorial Museum, including a saddle used by President Lincoln.

The Hale House has a collection of art and period furniture circa 1800. The furniture collection includes a desk used by Dover's first Mayor, Andrew Peirce, and a table used by Rev. Jeremy Belknap where he wrote "A History of New Hampshire".

The Keefe House has more than 7,000 historical and genealogical documents including wills dating back to 1741 - even a 1771 tax bill from King George.

The Museum is open to the public 12:30-4:30 P.M. Wednesday through Sunday, except holidays, and is closed December 1 through March 1.

Snug in Your Bed at the Historic Colonel Spencer Inn

While I am a formal writer, and my "OMG" experiences are reserved for waterfalls, mountaintops, spectacular views from NH trails, exquisitely brewed, delightfully chilled beers at brewpubs, meals at the Mad River Tavern or Foster's Boiler Room, and other NH natural or positive sensory experiences (of which there are many), I offer my take on the Colonel Spencer Inn owned by, friends and fellow Granite State Ambassadors of mine, Mary Jo and Scott Stephens.

Located on a grassy knoll on Route 3, a country byway just south of the village of Campton NH, is the historic Colonel Spencer Inn, an unusually cozy, friendly bed and breakfast. Built in 1764, the Colonel Spencer mixes the charm and hospitality of a country inn with the modern comforts and amenities of today's living. The Inn is conveniently located moments away from the vibrant, bustling New England town of Plymouth, home of Plymouth State University and the myriad year round activities and sporting events associated with the school. If relaxation or sightseeing is your preference, the Flume, Cannon Mountain Tramway, The Basin, Kancamagus Highway, and numerous mountains are a quick drive just up nearby I-93. The Colonel Spencer Inn is in many ways a typical yet unique New Hampshire hostelry, where a stay would be a memorable highlight of any visit to the White Mountains.

Hebron, a quintessential New England village at the North end of Newfound Lake, features a typical general store, a white spired wooden church, and 18th century vintage colonial homes surrounding a shaded, gazebo - adorned town green . What a perfect place to step back in time and perhaps take some pictures. Something to please everyone awaits you here!

I love the Currier Museum of Art because it has on display New Hampshire’s foremost collection of world class American and European art including works by Monet, Picasso, O’Keefe, Remington, Saint-Gaudens, and NH’s own Aponovich to mention just a few of the many artists.

As a docent for the Frank Lloyd Wright Usonian designed Zimmerman House tours, I highly recommend you include in your visit a tour of the Zimmerman House with me as your guide. I tell a lot of the guests who visit the house that I would move in tomorrow but often ponder where I would put my flat screen TV. The House tours take place between April and December and reservations for this tour are highly recommended. Viewing this short video will entice you even more to want to schedule your tour of the Zimmerman House:

The Currier’s Gift Shop has that unusual gift that is just right for any occasion. I am also a volunteer at the gift shop and enjoy interacting with all of the museum guests that visit the shop.

Are you looking for a new place to enjoy a quiet lunch? The Winter Garden Café at the Currier is where I have enjoyed a cup of fresh soup or chowder, a Caesar salad with freshly sliced chicken, or a selection of cheese and crackers. The dessert selection will certainly temp you. Entrance to the Café for lunch is free.

We Are Family ...

The Hanover Street Chophouse in Manchester, NH has been a family favorite since its opening just over five years ago. My husband and I have been there numerous times for the Chophouse renowned long, romantic dinners, and we have been there separately for various business lunches, dinners and drinks. We love the exquisite interior, all the dark wood and intimate seating creates a cozy environment full of plush and luxury.

The first time with the kids and my mother from out-of-state was before attending A Christmas Carol at the Palace Theatre a few years back. The food was amazing (the seafood tower is legendary!) and the service impeccable. Needless to say, we all had a wonderful experience! A handful of other times, we have popped into the Chophouse later in the evening with the kids for dessert, cocktails and coffee after a night of festivities elsewhere. Every time, despite the hour, the staff was always welcoming, the ambiance inviting, and the fare delighting. Not all restaurants can handle a family, especially impromptu, so it is a tremendous credit to the Chophouse to have such a lasting impression on us.

The Hanover Street Chophouse celebrated their fifth anniversary early this December. My family and I are thrilled to have this jewel in Manchester and look forward to our next visit ... whenever that should be ... hopefully soon.

One of my favorite little known restaurant is Cafe Mangia on Bypass 28 between Manchester and Hooksett. Cafe Mangia is right next to Eaton's Candy and Cake Decorating, and offers traditional recipes that are claimed to have been passed down through generations. They certainly taste authentic! Cafe Mangia does accept reservations, but are limited in days open, so I would recommend to call ahead for hours. This establishment offers Bring Your Own Beverage (BYOB) with a set-up fee, so you can bring your favorite bottle of wine to enjoy with your meal. The food is Italian and fresh and made on the spot. Plan on eating at a leisurely pace, as it is a small operation and they take their time crafting your meal.

7,000 Miles with No Stop Lights

A couple of years ago my husband and I decided to explore the woodlands of New Hampshire by snowmobile. Although we don't own a snowmobile and we rarely ride, we went to Alpine Adventures in Lincoln NH to go on a guided snowmobile tour. It was fantastic! If you don't have "winter attire" for just $5 they will rent you insulated snowmobile suite. They do provide you with helmets.

My personal recommendations include:

Even if you are new and/or scared, ride your own snowmobile. I doubled up with my husband and found it was more work and harder to hold on to him, than it would have been to handle my own machine.
Stay overnight. You'll never want to leave! So plan ahead and rent a room. Get one with a whirlpool tub, jacuzzi, and/or hot tub, so you can soak your tired bones at the end of a long ride.
Pick a restaurant and plan dinner ahead of time. That way you can enjoy your trip without having to make any last minute decisions! We like the Woodstock Inn & Brewery. Great lodging, wonderful food and deliciously brewed beer (try Pig's Ear)!

New Hampshire has 7,000 miles of snowmobile trails. For those of you who own machines and love to ride in NH, check out the NH Snowmobile Association's website. It is packed with information to make your experience memorable!

White Mountain Mikey is nothing but a 'Kid' at heart. You all know I love trains and what better time of the year to enjoy them then during the holiday season. Santa's Holiday Express at the Conway Scenic Railroad in North Conway will let you visit with the Jolly Old Elf himself on a wonderful train ride through the picturesque Mt. Washington Valley. The Hobo Railroad in Lincoln offering a visit from Santa on a delightful ride in the Pemigewassett Valley along the Pemigewassett River. Don't forget both trains also offer a reenactment of the popular children's story, 'The Polar Express' by Chris Van Allsburg. The story of a young boy's magical journey to the North Pole. The Franco American Centre has a really interesting exhibit in their art gallery. The exhibit is called "Manchester By Bed" because the artist, Erwan LeBot, Googled Manchester on the internet from his home in France, and downloaded actual real-time photos of our Queen City. From these pictures, he painted a collection of watercolor paintings. That is the basis of his exhibit which will be on view until the end of December. It is definitely worth a visit!

Seasonal Strolling on the Heritage Trail

Visiting the Manchester area and tired after sitting on a plane or in a conference room? If so, a walk or jog along the Heritage Trail in Bedford is just the thing to relieve all that stress. Access is within walking distance of the Country Inn & Suites and Hampton Inn & Suites in Bedford. Walk down Hawthorne Drive to Station Road to the river and the trail north or south. Driving? Take Route 3 South of Macy's one and one-half miles to Hawthorne Drive.

I walk the trail daily from March to November and longer depending

on snow and am amazed at how the trail and river changes season to season. There are benches available where you can sit and relax and take in the view of the river and contemplate the days events. You can even take a sandwich and rest at one of the rustic picnic tables. Serenity is the name of the game and one of the great hidden away places to enjoy in the Manchester area.

If you're ever in the Plymouth/Campton area and need a warm, friendly place to eat, I highly recommend going to the Mad River Tavern located on Rt. 49 in Campton, just off exit 28 of I-93. We decided early this morning to meet a friend there tonight for dinner.

For the month of November, the Tavern has decided to have 3 dinner specials, which includes a house salad, each night Sunday through Thursday for the low cost of $10.00. Tonight, we each had one of the specials. I had the pork tenderloin with a mandarin BBQ sauce with walnuts and there were 3 nice pieces of very tender pork served with their veggie of the day, butternut squash and I chose rice pilaf as my side. I ended up taking 1 piece of pork home for my husband for his lunch tomorrow. My husband had the boneless short ribs with the side dish of macaroni and cheese (a nice size portion) as the ribs were so succulent & tender. He also had a house salad. Our friend decided on the third special, a Blackened Chicken California Wrap which was stuffed with carrots, lettuce & guacamole. She chose to have steamed broccoli as her side along with some hot sauce & blue cheese dressing and she said it was delicious.

We also love to sit in the Bar area,

as the bartender also waited on us and does a spectacular job of keeping it all together, serving drinks to the bar, offering lively conversation and making sure that everyone is happy. Alot of the waitresses have been there many years and everyone does a great job at keeping everyone satisfied with really good food and service. Whenever anyone asks us what our favorite place to eat is, we always tell them that you can't go wrong with Mad River Tavern.

On a side note, they also serve lunch during the week and if you're looking for an inexpensive place to go, this is the place. Our hiking group went there on Tuesday after our hike and we all had one of the $5.00 specials (a delicious turkey, stuffing & cranberry sauce sandwich on your choice of bread, with gravy on the side and a generous portion of French Fries). It was an incredible deal that you can't pass up. For lunch during the week, they serve their tavern menu, located on the back of the menu along with their appetizers and 3 different $5.00 specials.

Believe me when I say, this is truly a great restaurant that aims to please as you'll see if you ever go there. They have quite an extensive menu where you can get anything from apps to salads, from burgers/sandwiches to pasta, seafood, steaks etc. Mad River Tavern is truly a find for those of you traveling to Central NH in the Plymouth/Campton area or if you're lucky enough to live close by, then you can frequent the Tavern as many times as you'd like. Enjoy!!!

So it is past Octoberfest season, but there is still a lot to do if you prefer locally brewed beer and New Hampshire-made flavor! Here are a few places to check out if you haven't already or if you are ready for another round....

Milly's Tavern, Manchester, NH

The only true brewery in Manchester, Milly's Tavern has 16 of their own brews on tap and handcraft them every week. They do offer a mug club for those that want to come back for more at a reduced cost. Or if you want to take yours home to enjoy, they also will fill 64oz. growlers to go! (You simply must try their Pumpkin Ale, which is typically brewed year round and one of my all-time favorites!) In addition, they boast their nightclub scene, some nights with live music, and food. It is a win all the way around!

Portsmouth Brewery, Portsmouth, NH

The Portsmouth Brewery is the original NH brewpub and has been serving great food and handcrafted beers since 1991. The brewery is connected through common ownership with the Smuttynose Brewing Company, also located in Portsmouth. Between their Smuttynose offerings and their in-house brews, looks like they have about ten on tap at the moment. They offer tours Thursdays, Friday and Saturdays at 1:00pm and 3:00pm, and also offer 64oz. growlers or 22oz. bomber bottles to take home with you. They are known for their famous Kate the Great Russian Imperial Stout (which if you are interested, will be released March 7, 2011 and scratch tickets to start being sold January 24th). I haven't personally had this brew, but am thinking 2011 might be my year!

Martha's Exchange Restaurant & Brewing Company, Nashua, NH

Located in downtown Nashua, Martha's Exchange offers upwards of 25 different brews throughout the year, with a rotation of semi-regular, seasonals and reserve beers. From the meager beginnings as Martha's Sweet Shoppe to a luncheonette to the gorgeous restaurant it is today, Martha's has grown up to be a strong force in food and beverage. Their food is spectacular and many dishes offer a modern twist on old favorites. A recent lunch companion actually claimed to have never witnessed anyone not thoroughly enjoy their fare. I have to agree - mine was delicious!

If you are interested in sampling a few brews for contrast and comparison, try out the second annual New Hampshire Brewers Festival on Friday and Saturday November 12 and 13, 2010, in the Armory at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester, NH. There is a "Dinner with the Brewers" event on Friday night and two beer-tasting sessions on Saturday. More than enough opportunity to try out some new and savor some familiar brews. Over 18 brands are listed on the website, and the breweries listed above are included! Looking for a deal? The Radisson Hotel also offers garage parking, restaurant, lounge and package deals with rooms, meals and brewfest tickets.

Can't make the Festival? No worries, the New Hampshire Division of Travel and Tourism also offer a Brewery Tour map and brochure that you can download online at www.visitnh.gov and tour some of the best NH breweries at your own pace.

There seems to be a lot of spooky and scary Halloween activities around - from Haunted Acres in Epping, The Ghoullog in North Conway to Spooky World and Nightmare New England in Litchfield, from Fright Kingdom in Nashua to Haunted Overload in Lee - but what if you have goblins of the more timid variety or toddlers?

Don't fret, there are lots of options that won't frighten your tiny trick-or-treater. Below are just a few options to consider:

Mall Trick-Or-Treating:

My kids always loved this when they were little - it is a familiar setting, lots of goodies, less walking, no cars, mostly younger children, and everybody stays warm and cozy! This year, your children can do their store-to-store pilgrimage at roughly the same time as most NH communities, but you will be in a climate-controlled venue (i.e. no freezing pre-November winds for your little ones!). The picture to the right was also taken at The Picture People which is conveniently located right in the mall. We decided to have the professionals capture our newly one-year-old's first "real" Halloween and my first handmade, homemade costume.

I found three locations that are offering this type of event this year. First, Simon Malls are offering mall-wide trick-or-treating from 1-3pm on October 31 at both the Mall of NH in Manchester and Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua. Fox Run Mall in Newington is also offering mall trick-or-treating from 2-4pm on Halloween. At any of these locations, just look for the orange pumpkins in the windows of participating vendors. Is your little ghoul a Simon Malls Kidgets member? They can stop by the Guest Services counter for an extra goodie bag!

Tanger Outlets in Tilton also offered a trick-or-treat event on Friday, October 29th. The Management Office provided a Halloween bag with a small treat to all costumed children between 6-8pm. For added fun, they also held a costume contest in from of the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory at 7pm for those 12 and under.

Girl Scouts of Alstead:

Girl Scout troops 20978 and 22297 have organized a Halloween party for kids complete with games, prizes, snacks and crafts. This party is from 5-8pm on 10/31/2010 at the Alstead Town Hall on Main Street. With the Girl Scouts of America, you know that it will be good, clean fun and you can support a great organization at the same time!

Town Events:

Many individual towns have caught on that local residents need a better alternative for the little ghouls and goblins. You can ask at your local town hall or do an internet search with your town name + toddler + trick-or-treat. I found quite a few that would be great for my 2-year old, and possibly even my 1st grader (who is solely interested in Halloween for the goodies!).

And then when they are older and looking for the more traditional scary, or even downright frightening, Halloween experience, you can check out nicely organized websites like HauntWorld.com that categorize, rate and recommend the best Haunted Halloween venues!

I confess, I am a mall girl. Some people like to shop in quaint little stores that dot the landscape of New Hampshire (including our southern tier), but I really love to shop in the mall. New Hampshire has some pretty nice malls including the Rockingham Mall in Salem NH at Exit 1 just after the NH/MA border on I-93.

When I volunteered on a committee at the Salem Chamber of Commerce 10 years ago I had a great marketing idea (that they never used)...

The 3 Best Reasons To Visit Salem NH

Exit 1 SHOPPING (The Mall at Rochingham Park)
Exit 2 ATTRACTIONS (Canobie Lake)
Exit3 FOOD (Common Man)

I still like the idea.... My favorite Exit is #1 - The Mall Exit.... From Manchester NH (where I live) The Mall at Rockingham Park (or as we fondly refer to it the "Salem" Mall) is about 25 miles or about 1/2 hours drive south on I-93. The drive is usually pretty fast except during rush hours, holidays, and Sunday evenings when people are driving south from NH back to Massachusetts and points south.

I also receive Twitter alerts on my phone with any problems and/or construction delays so I can plan accordingly (because, of course, I don't text & drive). There has been quite a bit of construction as they continue the Rebuilding of I-93 Salem to Manchester. If you are driving North to NH from Massachusetts, the traffic will be the opposite, busy on Fridays due to lots of people driving North to NH's beautiful Lakes & Mountains.

I was happy to see a few new stores in the mall since my last visit including Sephora a gigantic makeup store. I love the way they package up what you buy... like it is a little present just for you! I also use CardStar (for iPhone or smart phone users this is a cool app that keeps all your "rewards cards" scanned in so you don't have to carry the actual cards with you... just your phone.)

Speaking about iPhones, there is an Apple Store at the mall. Although closer to my house, I am sad that there isn't one at The Mall of New Hampshire. Everyday since the iPad and the iPhone 4 came out they have LINES at their door to get in. Incredible! I haven't gotten either yet... YET.

Being in the tourism industry, I always look out for our guests and think about them in my everyday life. Shopping is no different. Here are some tips for you:

Kids... there is a hurricane machine
Parents... there is a wall of brochures giving you ideas of other things to do
The mall is 2 levels and if you walk each level twice you will have walked 1 mile.
The food court has pretty good choices and has a horse carousel for the little ones
There is garage parking so when it is raining or snowy you are under cover
Anchor stores include Macy's, Sears, & JC Penny (here is the Floor Plan)
